NY Senate Passes Bill That Makes “Annoying” Police A Felony

The New York State Senate passed a controversial bill on Wednesday that aims to classify ‘aggravated harassment of a police officer’ as a crime, but will it give the authorities the green light for strong-arm tactics if passed?

Sponsored by Senator Joe Griffo, Bill S.2402 would make it a felony to “harass, annoy, or threaten a police officer while on duty.”

“Our system of laws is established to protect the foundations of our society,” Senator Griffo said. “Police officers who risk their lives every day in our cities and on our highways deserve every possible protection, and those who treat them with disrespect, harass them and create situations that can lead to injuries deserve to pay a price for their actions.”

Griffo said that New York police require extra safeguards because “too many people in our society have lost the respect they need to have for a police officer…. We need to make it very clear that when a police officer is performing his duty, every citizen needs to comply and that refusal to comply carries a penalty.”

The bill, which will now move to the State Assembly, would make it a crime for a person to make any type of physical action aimed at intimidating a police officer. Harassment of a police officer would be recognized as a Class E Felony, punishable by up to four years in prison.

It’s already a crime to harass or threaten a police officer. Actually, it’s a crime to threaten anyone, it’s just difficult to get the police involved or prove it to officialdom when it happens in the street… oh, unless you’re threatening a police officer, because then the police are involved and the victim is seen by the courts as an excellent witness.

So the question you should be asking yourself now is why they would pass a law that’s only purpose is to allow the police to arrest someone when nothing that would pass for a crime under current laws is happening. This law isn’t needed to stop people from attacking police, because that’s already illegal. This law isn’t needed to stop people from threatening to attack police, because that’s already illegal. This law isn’t needed to stop people from interfering in a police officer’s duties, because that’s already illegal.

So what exactly is the purpose of this law, do you think, and how will it keep communities safe? Or to put it better: from what do you think it will keep which communities safe?

Let’s consider the case in Florida where a kid holding a puppy was wrongfully accused of police officers of being in a fight. When they determined that there was no fight and no need for their intervention, he started to walk away. At that point, the officers involved claimed that his disrespect to them… the act of looking at them (the so-called “dehumanizing stare”) and walking away… indicated he was a threat that needed to be neutralized, and they ended up basically choke-slamming him.

(Sidebar: what community was being kept safe in that case, and from what?)

We can imagine nothing the kid did is illegal under previously existing laws on the books. But add a law that makes it illegal to “annoy” a police officer, and that makes “annoying” equal to “threatening”, and suddenly there is endless justification for that sort of violent and unprovoked police action.

Now, that case was in Florida, but New York is already a city where white residents are overwhelmingly more likely to be carrying illegal weapons and drugs but Black and Latino residents are far, far more likely to be stopped, a city where the cops use “random” stops to bust people of color for carrying amounts of marijuana that aren’t a crime to possess for personal use but are a crime to display (empty your pockets == put it on display, refuse to empty your pockets == violating a lawful order and giving probable cause… classic double-bind). New York is also a city where precinct captains advise their officers to shoot people of color in the head so that when the smoke clears there’s only one side of the story left to tell.

The only purpose of this law is to give police officers unnecessarily (and dangerously) broad leeway in deciding who they arrest/attack and why, and history… meaning recent history and current ongoing events… tells us which communities are going to bear the brunt of this power grab. Looking at your profile pic, I can tell why you’re pretty sanguine about it, but you’re kidding yourself if you think this is about public safety.

This is probably just me, but I feel like they’re mocking me. It makes me livid that they’re going to “pretend” to be poor to show why they’re shouldn’t be cuts, but they then get to go back to their lifestyle. I live this lifestyle. I have to make the small amount of food last. They don’t. They do this for a week and then they’re done. They get to go back to their paychecks. They get to go back to their salaries. They get to go back to their extravagant lifestyle of being able to buy fresh fucking fruit. I have to splurge, keyword splurge, on fresh fruit. I have to hope my blood doesn’t turn into ramen. (That’s a joke, or should have been. I’m not funny when I’m angry.) It’s just unfair that they’re going to live this lifestyle one week instead of listening to me. There is not reason for them not to just listen to us. They just want to seem like heroes for living this lifestyle for one week, while I’m vilified for living this lifestyle my entire life.

okay, let’s take seriously this idea of cutting congressional salaries for a week. the food stamps protest is limited to 30 house democrats, but let’s be generous and say that every single one of the 253 democrats currently in congress (201 representatives and 52 senators) agreed to part with a week’s worth of their $174k annual salary. that’s about $3300 individually, and about $850k in all. that’s nothing. it’s a drop in the ocean. it’s a grain of sand in the sahara. it’s about 0.004% of the $20b that house republicans are proposing in cuts to food stamps. it’s about 0.021% of the $4.1b in cuts that already passed in the senate. in the greater scheme of things this salary cut would be just as meaningless as you seem to think the protest is.

i can’t read rich white congressmen’s minds so i can’t know what their motives are, but frankly i don’t care. whether they’re doing this to “mock” me or whatever is completely irrelevant. these politicians oppose the cuts to food stamps. that’s all that should matter. perhaps if people focused their ire on the wastes of air who support these cuts instead of taking offense at every imagined insult from the people who actually represent their interests, we wouldn’t be in this mess.

Saw this somewhere else and felt the need to post it cause no one else ever really tells you this stuff

My mom never really noticed. She noticed when she was breast feeding my little brother and blood started coming out instead of milk.

My mom said she felt and saw a little lump in the shower. She was lucky enough she found it at stage 2

My mom had a mammogram. The radiologist thought the spots were just regular calcium deposits.

Turns out it was triple negative breast cancer that had spread to her lymph nods. Mastectomy, radiation and chemo saved her life.

This could SAVE a life.

Just an fyi, there are also common breast tumors that are non-malignant. I found and had one removed when I was 18. It was really scary at first, but I felt do much better knowing that I found it just by randomly doing a test on myself.
Some tips on feeling for it:
1. I don’t want to say you’ll always know all the time, but the tumor tissue felt MUCH different from the other tissue for me. It was hard, immovable, and didn’t have the “golf ball” texture deep breast tissue has. I also googled how it felt and matched up with other places. Basically, you know what the rest of your tissue feels like, and if something feels WAY off, it’s at least worth asking your doctor for a second opinion.
2. When you’re young and just want to get something checked out, a mammogram isn’t always necessary. I had an ultrasound and biopsy and that’s it. So don’t think you have to go through a ton of pain if you want to really get it checked!

What I think is that all over our country - all over our planet - there are huge numbers of people who feel alienated and sometimes victimized by the privileged and the powerful, whether that’s rich people, powerful corporations or occupying nations. They feel that their interests are not being represented and, in many cases, know that their friends and families are being murdered by foreign soldiers. I suppose people like that may look to their indigenous theology for validation and to sanctify their, to some degree understandable, feelings of rage.

Comparable, I suppose to the way that homophobes feel a prejudicial pang in their tummies then look to the Bible to see if there’s anything in there to justify it. There is, a piddling little bit in Leviticus. The main narrative thrust of the Bible though, like most spiritual texts, including the Quran is: be nice to each other because we’re all the same.

When some football fans smash up shops and beat each other up, that isn’t because of football or football clubs. It’s because loads of white, working class men have been culturally neglected and their powerful tribal instincts end up getting sloshed about in riotous, lager carnivals. I love football, I love West Ham, but I’ve never been involved in football violence because I don’t feel that it’s my only access to social power. What the English Defence League and other angry, confused people are doing and advocating now - violence against mosques, Muslims, proliferation of hateful rhetoric - is exactly what that poor, sick, murderous man, blood soaked on a peaceful street, was hoping for in his desperate, muddled mind.

The extremists on both sides have a shared agenda: to cause division, distrust, anger and violence. Both sides have the same intention. We cannot allow them to distort our perception.

The establishment too is relatively happy when different groups of desperate people point the finger at each other because it prevents blame being correctly directed at them. Whenever we are looking for the solution to a problem, we must identify who has power. By power I mean influence and money. The answer is not for us to move further from one another, crouched in opposing fortresses constructed from vindictive words. We need now to move closer to one another, to understand one another. If we can take anything heartening from this dreadful attack, it is of course the actions of the three women - it’s always women - that boldly guarded Lee Rigby’s body as he lay needlessly murdered. These women looked beyond the fear and chaos and desperation and attuned instead to a higher code. One of virtue, integrity and strength.

To truly demonstrate defiance in the face of this sad violence, we must be loving and compassionate to one another. Let’s look beyond our superficial and fleeting differences. The murderers want angry patriots to desecrate mosques and perpetuate violence. How futile their actions seem if we instead leave flowers at each other’s places of worship. Let’s reach out in the spirit of love and humanity and connect to one another. Perhaps we will then see what is really behind this conflict, this division, this hatred, and make that our focus.
